We received a shipment of more than two dozen chicks to raise into meat chickens (as opposed to egg-layers). The mortality rate for such chicks is fairly high; five have died so far.

My darling stridently-atheist 10-year-old daughter buried one of the dead chicks. She spaded some earth, set the dead chick in the hole, and then sprinkled a small amount of chick feed before covering up the body.

"Why did you bury some chick feed with the chick?"

"It was the only thing she was interested in."

I may have found her spiritual opening. I will not press, but I will provide more opportunities.

That is just so touching!

Our 17yo son is agnostic, but not in spite of us. He just doesn't see the significance of doing anything more than acknowledging there is something more than the day to day. Even though I miss his participating in ritual, his beliefs, or lack thereof, are his own... and that's fine by me.
