Subject:But I'm not ready!

Okay, I realize this is not a Pagan parenting issue per se, but I will take all the advice I can get.

My daughter, who is 18 months old *today* seems ready to start wanting to try the potty. We've been reading her books about it for months, and I try to "set a good example."

Suddenly, this week she is interested in yanking off her diaper and peeing "outside" like the beagle I'm currently housetraining. (okay, she didn't quite make it, but the laundry room *is* right next to the back door). Her favorite word is "outside" and she seems to have figured out the connection between peeing and being "outside."

The diaper also disappeared some time in the middle of the night last night...

Now I can basically housebreak a dog in a week or less, especially one as food-motivated as a beagle.

But this is a person. Where do I start? I actually had a mother at work suggest I start with a kiddie potty outside (our yard is walled and our neighbors aren't particulary nosy).

I think now might be a good time to explain the difference between kids and dogs. Doggy pees outside, kids pee in the potty.

As for the disappearing nightime diapers, I recommend duct tape.

Well yes, we are trying to teach her the difference :) Her potty books help. Some.

...when I say "Count your blessings." Our 2.5-year-old shows little to no interest in learning to use the potty.

You don't. I was just...thinking it would be another 6 months before I had to begin dealing with this.

From my own woes on the subject (see: http://community.livejournal.com/nfp_parents/10935.html), I can tell you that ripping off the diaper does not a potty trained child make.

I really think she just wants to be like the puppy, but she might not have the bladder control to do it (although making it to the laundry room is pretty impressive).

Personally, if she's all into peeing where the dog does, why not put a little kiddie pottie in the laundry room. If she ends up wanting to do all her potty business in there you could slowly move the potty to the actual potty (yes, I know that's exactly what you do with a dog, but hey, why not kill two birds with one stone?)
